The Iowa State Board of Education (State Board) works with the Iowa Department of Education (Department) to provide oversight, supervision, and support for the state education system that includes all public elementary and secondary schools, nonpublic schools that receive state accreditation, area education agencies (AEAs), community colleges, and teacher preparation programs. Every other year, the State Board elects a chairman and vice-chairman from its own membership; the Commissioner of Education acts as non-voting secretary to the Board.
